Giving back to your community via volunteer work is a great way to foster relationships with your neighbors and build a better tomorrow for everyone. But with so many people and organizations in need, it’s hard to know where to start. The following list of organizations are always looking for dedicated individuals who are willing to sacrifice a few hours each week for the greater good. Take a look and decide which option for volunteering in Memphis works best for you.

Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County

The love that you have for animals might make you reach out and volunteer your time at the Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County. The organization takes in animals that their owners surrendered and accepts animals taken in by the city or county. Many of the cats in the program need help developing socialization skills that will help them in their new homes. You can also sweep the facility, work in the adoption office, volunteer at adoption events, and take dogs for walks. The organization also needs locals who are willing to foster animals in their homes.

Habitat for Humanity

One of the top choices for those interested in volunteering in Memphis is Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis specifically works in the local community and builds homes in neighborhoods across the city. As a volunteer, you'll go through a training session that teaches you some of the skills you might need on construction sites. Volunteers do everything from building walls to pouring foundations. Habitat for Humanity also runs its own shop called the ReStore, which always needs volunteers who are willing to stock merchandise and work the cash registers.

Le Bonheur Children's Hospital

Le Bonheur Children's Hospital sees more than 200,000 patients every year. Volunteers work with sick children to help them feel more relaxed and comfortable. The hospital also needs volunteers to help during special events throughout the year.

Mid-South Food Bank

When those living in Memphis have a difficult time feeding themselves and buying groceries, they often turn to the Mid-South Food Bank for help. This food bank offers basic food, groceries, and supplies to people living in the areas around Memphis. Volunteers take in donations, stock the pantry with supplies, and help visitors find everything they need. You can also volunteer off-site at one of the food drives. These events help raise awareness of what the food pantry does and encourage locals to donate food and other supplies to the pantry.
